From The Head - Friday 9th January 2026Julia Langford, Headteacher of The Ryleys School, a private school in Alderley Edge, Cheshire

Welcome back to the new term and 2026! At the beginning of each term, the children with their teachers set objectives to achieve to help them focus on their priorities and areas for improvement, and, in assembly this morning, the children were very eloquent in explaining their goals. This is something that we also do as adults, both formally and informally, week on week, month on month, and especially as we enter a new year and make our 'resolutions'.

It is perfectly understandable as we commence a new year that we want to forge ahead in a positive manner and explore new ways and opportunities to improve things that either haven't gone particularly well in the past or things that we haven't yet been able to achieve. It is like a cleansing ritual and having a reset that allows us to start again. It was Buddha who said, 'No matter how hard the past, you can always begin again.'

Resolutions can be tricky as it can often feel like we are setting ourselves up for failure, and, after a promising start, by February, it's all fallen apart! Obviously, setting realistic goals is the key, but a healthy dose of ambition doesn't hurt either. A favourite quote based on life's challenges is courtesy of Thomas Edison, 'I've not failed. I've just found ten thousand ways that won't work.' Trial and error, is of course, how we navigate life and unless we give something a go, we will never know if it's attainable or achievable.

What the new year brings will depend a great deal on what we bring to it - while we can't control everything in our lives, we can dictate and direct a significant part of it and that is a good place to start.

I wish you and your families much happiness and health for the forthcoming year. Julia Langford Headteacher
