Julia Langford, Headteacher of The Ryleys School, a private school in Alderley Edge, Cheshire

The performing arts are an integral part of life at The Ryleys School and we are blessed with a vibrant Music and Drama Department.

Music and drama have always played a pivotal part in school as this area is so important in enhancing the children's school and educational experience.

The significant role that music plays in enriching children's education has been recognised by the Department of Education which is investing £101 million pounds to enable Arts Council England to roll out 43 hubs across the country to help deliver musical activities, equipment and teacher training to children and young people, partnering with organisations including the London Symphony Orchestra.

The chief executive at ACE, commented:

Music education is enormously powerful – it can enrich young people’s lives, help them connect with the people around them, and start them on the pathway to fruitful and fulfilling careers."

This is so true and the impact and power of music have always been recognised in school. The children are fortunate to have specialist teaching from Nursery upwards to help them discover their talents and ability in this valuable area.

There is so much on offer for the children to be involved in at many different levels: class lessons, group sessions or individual tuition, there is something for everyone and everyone is offered these amazing opportunities. When adults are asked which skill they wished they had, so many comment that they wished they could play an instrument or sing, so offering those early experiences is so important and incredibly confidence-building.

Over the years, we have all been treated to some fantastic and inspirational performances by the children which have been truly captivating. Whether it be our spectacular plays, instrumental groups, choirs or solo performances, each one has provided those very special memories for both the spectators and performers, and we look forward to many more to come.

Have a wonderful weekend in the sunshine.

Julia Langford.
