English As An Additional Language

At the Ryleys, we have a number of children from overseas who join us with various levels of English language knowledge. Due to our international culture, teachers are well prepared to differentiate for children with English as an Additional Language with support from the Learning Enhancement department. Specific English as an Additional Language (EAL) tuition is also available in school for children who relocate from overseas.

On entry to the school your child will be assessed to help us find out their level of English use and you will be contacted to discuss their educational background, home language use and what further support we feel they would benefit from. This support may be in a small group or 1:1 dependent on your child's level. This is reviewed on a termly basis.

Communication

If you have any concerns about your child’s educational development, please contact either the relevant subject teacher first to find out more and then, should they feel further discussion is needed, the Learning Enhancement Department will be in touch to arrange a meeting. If we have concerns about your child’s well being and feel the Learning Enhancement Department can assist, we will contact to make arrangements.

CASE STUDY

Terry joined The Ryleys in Year 5 from China with very little written and spoken English. In just four months, he produced the work below. The hand-writing, grammar and story-telling are exceptional. Here at The Ryleys we have very strong Learning Enhancement department that can help children with EAL reach their full potential and prepare them for the English senior school examination process.
