Science
The teaching of Science at The Ryleys begins at Nursery level as
we feel it is vital that children have an understanding of the
world around them from as early an age as possible. The living
things they look at, the physical processes such as 'Floating and
Sinking' and the emphasis on a Healthy diet all provide an
excellent foundation for the topics the girls and boys will go on
to study as they move through the school.
From Reception up to Year Two Science, is integrated into themed
study units to enable the children to see how it fits into their
environment. From Year Three onwards it becomes a separate
discipline and is taught by a subject specialist. We aim to include
a variety of teaching and learning styles to engage and provide for
all students. We use practical work and other kinaesthetic
exercises as much as possible in order to reinforce the scientific
knowledge covered in lessons.
As the children are taught the subject separately from a
relatively early stage compared with other schools they have a
thorough understanding of concepts and are fully prepared for
their common entrance exams, scholarships and other entrance
examinations at both 11+ and 13+, as well as for Science in their
secondary schools. The feedback we receive is that our pupils leave
us with a strong foundation and a confident approach in all areas
of the subject.
Our children are given every opportunity to explore and discover
for themselves inside and out of the classroom. There are several
Science trips made through the academic year to places including
Manchester Museum, Spaceport, The Chestnut Centre, Derbyshire,
where our native animals such as otters and barn owls can be
studied, as well as trips to The Blue Planet, near Liverpool, to
learn about sea life and also to Catalyst in Widnes, to study
topics such as 'Electricity' and to learn the theory behind every
day chemical reactions. It also enhances the classroom teaching
when experts visit the school and talk to the children about their
area of expertise. We have had visitors who have brought animals
ranging from birds of prey to South American Tree Frogs, as well as
those who have performed experiments or given demonstrations on
topics such as the Solar System. All of these experiences have
inspired and captivated the children.
