Music
The Ryleys enjoys an outstanding reputation for the quality of
its musicianship, especially singing. Every pupil is encouraged to
take up an instrument or to join one of the school's three choirs
and there is never a moment when the sound of music cannot be found
emanating from somewhere within the school. Music lessons begin in
Nursery and continue throughout the school.
The Ryleys participates successfully in a wide range of choir
concerts and competitions. These have included The BBC Choir
Competition, The Alderley Music Festival, The Rotary Choir Festival
and The Youth Music Competition.
Our choirs have also been invited to sing alongside such highly
regarded choirs as The Manchester Boys' Choir and the Tatton
Singers.
In 2009 the senior choir visited Reykjavik in Iceland singing in
schools and churches, and there is an annual visit to London.
Indeed, the choirs and soloists perform at such a wide variety
of events that the diary gets filled up very quickly!
Professional individual music tuition, in an impressive range of
instruments, is available to children aged from 4 years, and every
pupil participates in a musical production at least once a
year.
All musicians are prepared and encouraged to sit the Associated
Board Grade Exams, with pupils regularly reaching Grade 5 before
leaving. Guitarists enter the Rock School Exams.
A number of Music Scholarships are available each year. Awards
are made to pupils applying to the school who have outstanding
ability and promise, and are fully committed to developing their
musical talent.
Each year a number of Ryleys pupils, in their turn, are
successful in being offered Musical Scholarships to leading public
schools. These have included Shrewsbury School and Giggleswick
School.
Finally, at the end of each year, the school puts on its
signature event, the Summer Concert. Involving well over 150 pupils
- as well as teachers, friends and parents of the school - the
concert is a wonderful celebration of music at The Ryleys.
"My focus, as Director of Music, is to provide an
environment in which pupils' musical talents can be discovered and
nurtured and where they can grow to be confident musicians who love
all genres of music and musical experiences"
Jenny Grant
