Maths
The Mathematics Department at The Ryleys aims to instil in its
pupils an enthusiastic and confident approach towards mathematics,
thereby increasing competence and skills. Pupils quickly realise
that mathematics can be creative, enjoyable and a life skill.
As a non-selective school we employ a wide range of teaching
methods and delivery styles to ensure that every pupil, regardless
of his or her innate ability, can achieve their absolute optimum
level of performance. Pupils are made to feel comfortable working
in mixed ability, groups with support available both within and
outside the classroom. Maths clubs, theme days and dedicated
"puzzle times" help the boys and girls to see mathematics beyond
the syllabus and to apply their mathematical knowledge throughout
the curriculum.
In the Junior School the emphasis is on arithmetic skills,
number bond and tables. At The Ryleys the rote learning of times
tables is considered the start of the process not the end and all
aspects of tables work are covered, ensuring complete understanding
of each one. The emphasis is on 11+ exams to the local grammar
schools as the pupils move through the Middle School and the early
years of the Senior School. All 13+ exams are catered
for including day school, Common Entrance and Public School
Scholarship examinations. Pupils are also encouraged to enter a
variety of National mathematical competitions and we have enjoyed
much success in these.
