Reception

The Best Start

The Reception class at The Ryleys is a blend of formal teaching and child-initiated learning. From the outset, strong foundations in numeracy and all aspects of literacy, with a real emphasis on reading and writing, are laid by the class teacher and her assistant. With class sizes of below twenty pupils, a truly individual approach is possible with each child's particular needs being identified and met.

The children are introduced to elements of Science, History, Geography, RE Art and Craft through topic work while Games/PE, French, Dance/Drama and Music are taught by specialist teachers, so that, in these areas, too, the best possible start is given.

Incorporating the national Early Years Foundation Stage into the day's structure also allows the Reception children to learn through self-initiated activity, promoting independent learning and the development of social skills.

There are trips and outings to supplement and enrich classroom learning and the children are entertained by performers and other interesting visitors throughout the year.

Pastoral Care

Learning should be an overwhelmingly and richly enjoyable experience for every child - there is no doubt that a happy child is a successful child - so central to our whole approach is a high level of pastoral care and support. We are great believers in the 'triangle of success' formed by teachers, parents and pupils and, by open communication, involvement and total accessibility, each Reception child can enjoy the experience of school to the full.

Discovering and Nurturing Talent

Even at the earliest stage of schooling, we believe that children should be encouraged and inspired to participate in a wide range of different activities.

This way, a child may discover where his or her gifts and talents lie. The school then seeks to develop and nurture those talents, providing opportunities and teaching that will enable them to flourish. Music, Drama, Art and Sport are very strong in the school and it all starts in Reception!
