The Nursery School

Ages 2 ½ to 4 years

Outlined below are some of the many and varied activities that fill the busy Nursery day:

Each morning, as the boys arrive, they are welcomed and settled to one of the activities for the day

Group Activities

These may include the whole class in drama, music, movement, class discussions and stories. Smaller groups of boys play together with sand, water, play dough, board games, construction toys, puzzles, craft materials and in the home corner.

Individual Activities

Each child spends some time every day working closely with his teacher solving problems and developing skills. He may work on the computer, use sorting and matching apparatus and games, sew, cook, paint, and work with clay/tissue paper and a wide variety of materials.

Topics

A large proportion of each term' s activities are based around a theme or topic, which often arise from the boys’ own interests and activities. These result in a wide variety of activities including topic books, work sheets, number work, model making, craft, cooking, songs, poems, stories, drama and movement, wall and tabletop displays.

Playtime

The boys have a minimum of three sessions of outdoor play during the day.  In the play area, there are two activity centres, a large sandpit, a paved area where the boys can ride tricycles, a grassed area and a covered veranda.  Both activity centres are surrounded by a soft play surface for the boys' protection.  If the weather is unsuitable for outside play, we use the adjacent hall where there is a range of large and small play equipment.

The Nursery boys have their lunch with the rest of the Junior School in the main School dining room.
At lunchtime, we will cut up a boy’s food if necessary and pour his drink.  We say a short grace before the meal and encourage good table manners and the correct use of cutlery and cups.
Throughout their time in the Nursery, the boys are encouraged to be caring and helpful towards others.  Good manners, co-operation, taking turns and sharing are all appreciated and praised.  Praise and encouragement are the tools used to build a happy and productive environment

Places for our Nursery are highly sought after and we always suggest you register your son as soon as possible.

The Nursery Staff are looking forward to welcoming your son to The Ryleys
